Susan Hitt
Susan Hitt began her journey with New Hanover County Schools in August of 2005 when she started teaching at Laney High School. After ten wonderful years there, she moved to central office where she is the high school District Lead English Language Arts teacher. Helping teachers marry content with digital technology to engage students is her passion. Kylee Maarschalk
Kylee Maarschalk teaches English, journalism, and yearbook at New Hanover High School. In addition, she is the Lead Mentor of the school’s SOS beginning teacher support program. She is a 2010 graduate of Malone University in Canton, Ohio where she majored in Integrated Language Arts. She began her teaching career in August 2010 at Brunswick Early College High School and transitioned to NHHS in August 2013. She has enjoyed making great connections with incredible teacher leaders throughout New Hanover County and aims to incorporate global citizenship and community awareness into all of her classes. Hannah Moon
Hannah Moon is an English teacher and the department chair at Laney High School. She received her English literature degree and teaching certificate from UNCW. She then received her Master’s Degree in Education in 2008. She did her student teaching at New Hanover High School and began her teaching career at Laney and hasn’t left since. Hannah teaches English II, English IV, and AP Literature and is also an English I teacher for NCVPS. She enjoys reading and instilling the love of reading in both her students and her young son. Emily Perez
Emily Perez is an English teacher at E. A. Laney High School.  She has proudly called Laney “home” for the entirety of her four-year teaching career, including her student internship.  Emily received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a Secondary Teacher Licensure from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and remains a loyal fan and supporter of the UNCW Seahawks.  She has taught various levels of English I, English II, and English III and served as the English Department’s instructional coach for the Fall semester of 2016-2017. In her spare time, Emily enjoys fulfilling her passion for dance, fitness, and literature and loves finding new ways to connect kinesthetics to content in her classroom. Delia Herman
Delia Herman currently teaches English II at John T. Hoggard High School, where she is also the club adviser for Girls Learn International, a human rights organization that advocates for universal girls' education. After graduating from UNCW with a Bachelor's Degree in Middle Grades Education in 2012, she began her career in Brunswick County teaching 7th grade math and language arts. Ready for a new challenge, she made the change to high school in 2015 and has enjoyed navigating a new curriculum. Delia's goal is to help all teachers work smarter, not harder. Brenna Sheehan
Brenna Sheehan teaches English II and IV/Graduation Project at Laney High School. She received both her BA in English and her Masters in Teaching Secondary English at The University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She has helped facilitate two of the NHCS Twitter chats and enjoys finding new ways to integrate digital resources into her lessons and sharing them with others. Alex Schaivone
Alex Schaivone is an English teacher in the Lyceum Academy at New Hanover High School. She received her B.A. in English and M.A.T. in Secondary English Education from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. While completing her graduate work, she interned at New Hanover High School. After completing her internship, she began teaching in the Lyceum Academy in the spring of 2016. Alex teaches English III and AP Language & Composition. Beth Swindell

Beth Swindell is the English Department Chair, Graduation Project Coordinator, and Yearbook Adviser at John T. Hoggard High School, and has been teaching in New Hanover County for eleven years. She received her BA in Journalism and Mass Communication from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then went on to obtain her M.A.T in Secondary English from The University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Beth has been at Hoggard for her entire career, including her internship, and she continues to be very active in the school community through her involvement with the Instructional Team and her service as a mentor teacher in the school's SOS program for beginning teachers in addition to her other roles. Posts by Beth: Rescued: Why PLCs Prevent Educator Isolation 



Taylor Thomas
Taylor Thomas is an English teacher, department co-chair, and Lead Mentor at Eugene Ashley High School. He obtained his English degree and secondary teaching certification at UNCW and completed his internship at Hoggard. After graduating from UNCW in May of 2011, Taylor was hired at Ashley where he has been ever since. He has been teaching English I, II, and IV and greatly enjoys his time in the classroom with his students. Xan Mays

Xan Mays has been teaching for seven years. She previously taught in Onslow County and she taught 5th grade at an international school in Nairobi, Kenya. She currently teaches ninth and tenth grade at Hoggard High. Leslie Lucas
Leslie Lucas has been teaching for over 30 years.  She's taught middle and high schoolers on the coast and in the mountains of Virginia,  but she feels most at home here in Wilmington with her sophomores at Hoggard High School.  She’s taught almost 4,000 students, but she’s nowhere near ready to be put out in the pasture.  Even after 30 years, she’s still sleepless and nervous before the first days of school.  Leslie still loves teaching and most importantly, she still loves her students.  Teaching: Beautifully Imperfect; Open Doors
